France does it again
Serena Willams decided to wear the catsuit for the French Open, a few hours ago. Serena stated that I feel like a warrior in it, a warrior princess ... from Wakanda, maybe," she told reporters in May, referring to the movie Black Panther. "I've always wanted to be a superhero, and it's kind of my way of being a superhero."
The catsuit is functional, as Serena has suffered blood clots in the lungs from giving birth to her daughter. She did not wear the suit because she was trying to modest or for any religious wear. The tight suit also did not affect her playing time. The suit helps her blood circulation as she plays. However, the French Tennis Federation President Bernard Giudicelli stated that the tournament would be introducing a dress code. "I think that sometimes we've gone too far," Giudicelli said, specifically mentioning Williams' outfit and declared: "It will no longer be accepted. One must respect the game and the place."
Apparently, France has a problem when it comes to women wearing catsuits. The country has already been laughed at for banning the burkini, which is a looser form of a wetsuit that scuba divers wear. It has banned the niqab in public and in private and even has banned the hijab as well in schools. Serena has won the French Open three times in her career. While tennis is notorious for its strict uniform, particularly wearing white, the president of the French Opening has a huge disagreement with the way Serena dressed. Can we please stop turning a blind eye to France, when it comes to women and women dress code?
